Hi from Sheffield Hallam!

Hello

*For students from Sheffield Hallam University who identify as being on the autism spectrum*

This is Lucy from Inclusive Support. We normally run the Social in person, but we obviously can't do that right now. We are using this platform to support you to connect with each other through these difficult times.

Please use this thread to write:

  • what you are studying
  • what your interests and hobbies are
  • anything else you would like to share with fellow autistic students at Sheffield Hallam University ...

... and hopefully you can then begin to communicate with and support each other here :)

One student has suggested having digital pen pals so you could use this thread to organise this among yourselves.

Please make sure you follow the community rules

Thank you and take care

Lucy

  • Hello - I'm Sara and my son, Jonny, is looking to attend Sheffield Hallam. He hopes to start in the fall of 2023 to study Animation. I'd love to hear more about experiences from students on the spectrum, as well as the process for applying. Due to our school calendar here in Bermuda, he'll still be 17 when he begins. Thank you!

  • Hi all

Just in case anybody from Sheffield Hallam University looks here, we have moved our online socialising to a different platform: Discord

If you would like more information about the Discord group please email inclusivesupport@shu.ac.uk and title the email 'More Information About Discord Group'.

Also, our web information aimed at autistic students has moved. It is now here: Web information for autistic students

    Thanks

    Lucy

  • Hi all

Here is our new web page containing information for autistic students:

    Web information for autistic students

There is some useful information on the web page, including videos and writing by Hallam students on being an autistic student.

There is one piece of information that is incorrect - the information about The Social. This will be corrected soon.

    Here is the correct information:

We are currently running a remote Social, which means that we are socialising online using video chat.  We usually alternate these Socials between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They are normally from 4.00pm to 5.00pm.

     What happens at the Social?

     We talk about

    • what we have been doing
    • how we are managing a certain aspect of our lives (such as maintaining routine)
    • what we think about certain topics
    • a particular hobby or interest
    • recommendations for books, films, TV

We have also started to do quizzes and will be doing other activities such as games in the future.

All students who have declared to the university that they are autistic receive a weekly email invite to the Social. The invite always says what will be happening in the Social that week.

    Who can attend the Social?

Students who identify as being on the autism spectrum can attend. You don't need to have had autism diagnosed by a professional.  Applicants who identify as being on the autism spectrum can attend after the date of the question and answer session in July.

    How to Join

Just attend when you want to. There is no need to sign up or register.

  • Hi I'm Hannah :) I'm studying a PGDE in secondary science and I love watching movies and TV.

  • Hi I'm Hannah :) I'm studying a PGDE in secondary science and I love watching movies and TV.

  • Hello! I hope you're all doing ok.

If anyone has any hints or tips to share about how you have put in place structure and routine to your daily life please do share them here!

It's really useful for other students who might struggle more with these things to learn how people have put in place structure and routine.

Also, it's nice to share these things as even people who are good at putting in place structure and routine can learn from one another.

    Thanks

    Lucy

  • Good Morning Everyone!

What have you been doing this weekend?

    Some things i've done:

    • Weight training
    • Reading stories to my friends' children using Zoom
    • Chatting to my nan on the phone
    • Watching Flight of the Conchords
    • Planting seeds

Do you have any tips for other students about things to do with their time?

    All the best

    Lucy

  • Thanks Lucy.

I'm going to email the mature student society.

And take a look at the link you provided.

  • Hi all

Below is a link to our web information for autistic students:

Web Information for Autistic Students at Sheffield Hallam University

Please note that any information about meeting up in person currently does not apply. However there is still a lot of information and support available so I thought it was worth sharing this here.

    Thanks

    Lucy

  • Ah that’s good, that plus the fact you seem focused on autism is really positive... now I just need to overcome the anxiety and apply!

  • Hi Anthony, Dee and anyone else who is interested :)

There is a mature student society at Hallam: You can contact them here to find out more:

    All the best

  • I’m thinking about going back to uni but I’m really anxious about it, worried about social isolation which has been really problematic for my ASD. So I want to pick where I go carefully.

  • The staff and students are friendly and make you feel welcome. I think the staff appreciate having an adult in the class.

I'm the oldest on my course.

  • Dee, what is Sheffield Hallam like for mature students?

  • Hi, I'm Dee.

I'm studying Law, first year mature student.

    Recently diagnosed with Asperger's at 50, I'm 51 now.

The diagnosis, starting uni and being 51 has been far to hard. I really want to achieve and not be held back.

Haven't been able to make the socials due to uni timetable, if uni ever opens, I would like to attend.

Live alone and the increase in online time is not something I'm enjoying, due to the light from the devices, I know I can adjust the light but I find the devices draining.

  • Howdy all!

My name is Reece, I study Aerospace engineering, going on to do an MSc in engineering management next year, I have Asperger's

I never went to any of the social's, never thought they would be my thing. So I am pushing the boat out and going on here to see what it's like, while we are all stuck indoors. So, how is everyone?

  • Hello!

It's Lucy from Inclusive Support again.

Hope you've all managed to find some nice things to do at home this weekend.

What fiction have any of you been watching/reading in the past few weeks?

What fiction would you recommend to other students right now?

    Post your replies here!

    Lucy

  • I still have my SHUSAC hoodie. Stuck out tongue

  • Scuba's still about! My friends run it.

  • Sounds good - I need to build my confidence before I go, so it’ll be a year or two.
