Autistic and ADHD sides clashing

Is anyone else here both autistic and ADHD?

For anyone who is, I have a question. Do you ever feel like the two sides of your brain are constantly fighting with each other and wanting different things?

One side of my brain wants complete calm, quiet and rest and the other side needs constant stimulation, activity, achievement and things to do

It's absolutely exhausting, like a war in my own head

  • I can identify with this Billy87. I find my brain craves novelty, but I am so pattern oriented and risk averse that I end up struggling to allow this. When I do, I can feel relieved but only if the outcome is positive. If it is negative, then I blame myself and the self-criticism can be painful. I am very slowly trying to engage in creative projects whereby I can simultaneously combine elements of both pattern and novelty/stimulation but it is a daily difficulty.

As you say, it is exhausting and I have to be mindful of getting enough rest so that burnout does not become a problem. If I am doing something more restful, then I try to include a visual element. For example, I find listening to music relaxing but can find music videos more effective, due to the added visual stimulation.

    All the best.
