Routines and strategies for "adult life"?

Hello, this is my first post after the introduction. I have a job that I love and work long hours but I struggle with almost everything else: buying things I need, preparing food and having enough in the house to eat, opening mail, paying bills, checking my account balance, planning for upcoming tasks, keeping in touch with family, filling in forms for insurance, contracts or applications, seeing doctors for medical issues. I live on my own now and feel like a kid from Home Alone. I don't have an income that would allow me to get myself a sitter and don't want to ask for state or charity help. Does anyone here have any recommendations like apps or certain routines that help you with keeping on top of basic adult things?

  • Hi and welcome, as I don't remember seeing your introduction?

I have a schedule of things to do each day and things to do each week - as Debbie says, this can be typed in a notebook app or word processing software, or just written in a notebook.

I do my household accounts weekly, and keep a record of spending and balances in a spreadsheet, but if you can't use spreadsheets you can have a notebook where you record this and use a calculator to check balances.

I also plan meals once a week and do an online shopping order so that I have everything I need for those meals. You can also write down items that you are you are running out of during the week to add to this list. If you prefer to go to the supermarket, take a list with you so you get everything you need.

Appointments for things like doctors, hairdressers, plumbers coming to check the boiler, etc, can be put into a calendar on a phone or tablet, with a reminder set up, or you can use a paper calendar/ wall planner/diary to write these down. You can also record things like birthdays and insurance renewal dates using these methods.

    Hope this is helpful

  • Thank you yes, this is helpful. I see that I need to get some tracking system in place!
