Lanyards

Ok I am seeing a lot of things about these lanyard or hidden disability things and I just want to know more about them really.

Are they just for autism or can they be for multiple mental illnesses? Do you have to prove that you have these illnesses when applying? Or can anyone get them? Do they cost anything? Where would they be most beneficial? But also would wearing one of these lanyard thingies make you more vulnerable to those horrible people who like to take advantage?

Sorry for the silly questions, I’m just considering getting one myself but I don’t know much about them or how to apply for them.

  • Ahh ok, I might get one as I am having to go the drs a lot lately and the waiting rooms can be so noisy! Didn’t know they were on Amazon as well!

  • I bought my sunflower hidden disabilities lanyard on Amazon and wear it for hospital appointments etc. (£10).

  • Ooh what’s a coloured hidden disability lanyard? Is that for people who are physically disabled? I’m looking into getting the sunflower personalised lanyard but undecided on whether to have the regular one or the extra one with the high tec thingy. I don’t want to upload a pic of myself though haha

  • I have actually been looking at this this week, and thinking about for some time about using in certain contexts. To get the coloured hidden disabilities lanyard you need to hold a registered as disabled card (which costs around £20) you can register and buy the lanyanrd at the same time.

  • Ahh thank you for responding! I will have a look into the website and that now. I suppose these lanyards will be handy for places like airports etc but if I get one I’ll be aware of when I’d wear it! I mean I live by a six form and despite me being older, I’m much shorter so yeah I’d be an easy target for them!

  • Are they just for autism or can they be for multiple mental illnesses?

They are for any hidden disability so these are all covered.

You can get them from here I believe: https://hdsunflower.com/uk/  I notice they are priced at £14.40

To my understanding you don't need a diagnosis - it is all self approved.

There is quite a lot of info on the site about where to use them but be aware that not everyone knows about them so they will not necessarily pick up that you need special treatment. With luck this will improve with time.

would wearing one of these lanyard thingies make you more vulnerable to those horrible people who like to take advantage?

Essentially it does make you an easy mark so it is often wise to only put it on in places where you need the help, so it will remain in your pocket or bag most of the time.
