Penguin and Club Bars can no longer be called Chocolate

I don't want to throw shade on border biscuits because they are really good, but in my humble opinion these are better.

M&S make a custard cream biscuit covered in chocolate and it is so good. They cost £3.00 a pack and you don't get many.

Are they a biscuit though? ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

I get me a penguin 7 pack from Sainsbury's for a £1 on nectar. Love the terrible jokes. 

Border biscuits.  They cost the Earth (like seriously, though = they are ffffing expensive, but they also, quite literally, will NEVER be bettered, in my opinion.

I think this is true especially when you don't have much sugar in your diet anymore chocolate can taste really sweet.

I like the Lindt dark chocolate range with different flavors added like caramel and orange.ʘ⁠‿⁠ʘ

I don't know whether my tastes have changed as I have got older or maybe the composition of chocolate has changed but I find some types of milk chocolate to be too sweet.  I prefer the more expensive brands of chocolate nowadays.

I think a KitKat is a biscuit now, but the definition doesn’t sit comfortably with me.

When I'd typed my response to Expecto_Patronum, I had been thinking of the layout supermarkets use.

When I was growing up, the only KitKats I saw were at the chocolate and sweet counter of small toy shops or corner shops. The only bars were those of Cadburys or Galaxy. KitKats were just KitKats, Mars Bars, Milky Ways, Marathons, Picnics & so on were just called by their full names. The bars people bought back then were those of chocolate all the way through (or fruit & nut/wholenut) and divided into squares, & that kind of thing.

I call Penguins and Clubs both bars and biscuits. They are a biscuit, but the chocolate or (chocolate flavour) coating makes them a type of biscuit that is individually wrapped and therefore it is also a bar.

Well I was absolutely certain that a KitKat was a chocolate bar but most people seemed to vote the other way.

Perhaps you should consider doing a poll. As Kitkats tend to be displayed with other chocolate bars (or should I say chocolate-flavoured coated bars) I think of them as chocolate bars, not biscuits. Same with Penguins and Clubs.

I was recently having a debate with people over when something can be classed as a chocolate bar or a chocolate biscuit. I guess penguins and clubs are well and truly out of that debate and can definitely be classed as chocolate biscuits. Jury's still out on kitkats though.

I've not read the article, but as some habits can be hard to break, I think that unless I notice a difference in taste, I will continue to refer to the likes of such treats as chocolate-coated biscuits... as opposed to chocolate-flavoured coated biscuits.

Although it's sad, I cannot say that I'm surprised. Whilst the chocolate/cocoa bean content has been reduced, I'm guessing the cost of these big-brand treats will remain just as expensive.

I agree chocolate  wasn't something we had in our house. It was something me and my brother went to the shop to buy when we were given some money by my dad, usually one pound and we used to come back with about 6 bars to share with the family.

Christmas was exciting because of the tin of Quality Street, which I think we're much better back then.

It is sad, but I wonder if we take it too much for granted these days. When I was a child chocolate was a treat in my family. We looked forward to birthdays and Christmas when we would get boxes of chocolates. Chocolate biscuits were a special alternative occasionally to ordinary biscuits. When I was younger my Mum occasionally took me to Fortes after school for orange squash and a fruit club. At that time we didn't have chocolate biscuits at home, except occasionally Jaffa Cakes.
