What have you achieved recently??

What have you achieved lately? List whatever you like, big or small…

I haven’t achieved much sadly. I was on a bit of a downer these last few months as Snowflake, my cat, died suddenly. As she was literally my only friend losing her has hit harder than I imagined it would.

Anyway, one thing I’ve achieved is that every Saturday I’ve been going in to town and having a hot chocolate in the coffee shop. This is huge for me. I always feel anxious and part of me says ‘Are you nuts!?’ but I make myself do it and generally I feel OK when in there and enjoy it.
The coffee shop has been doing an Autistic Morning every Saturday, like our local Morrisons where they dim the lights and don’t play any music so autistic customers don’t get overwhelmed. If they hadn’t done this I wouldn’t have stopped for a hot chocolate the first time.

Definitely a big achievement for me!

  • Congratulations! What a lovely achievement Slight smile Do you think you will do any more open university courses? When my friend was looking at joining a childrens nursery she considered doing a course with OU.

  • I have published 3 graphic novels about autism and am now working on my first fantasy novel which features an autistic paranormal investigator. I a, 72,000 words into what I anticipate wil become a 100,000 word novel.

I voted in the U.S. presidential election. Sadly, my state went red in favor of the Republicans and Donald Trump as did a good part of the nation. Although I used to be an expat teacher and have thought about leaving the United States until some semblance of sanity is restored, I ultimately decided to stay put mainly because I have four cats which would severely limit my options abroad. Like many Americans, I will grit my teeth to endure the next four years and will pray that the United States remains a republic by the time Trump's term is over.

I HAVE NOT yet put in my pension papers as a retired teacher even though I should have done this back in early October.

I HAVE NOT gone grocery shopping in 3 weeks because I don't feel inclined to go anywhere. Since I have a 2nd refrigerator and a freezer in my garage along with a wall of shelving devoted to canned and dried grocery supplies, I likely won't have to go anywhere for a few more weeks.

  • Don't talk to me about Cyclists. They get up my ***.

  • I've been doing a film and TV production bootcamp.

  • I got a "badge" from the Open university for passing the test on the first half of their Open Learn course on understanding autism.

After everything I've learned through this site, I would have been very surprised if I hadn't passed though!

  • Thank you Charlie. x

Congratulations! That's a great achievement. I never managed to go through college, I think I managed a week Laughing
You should be so proud of yourself for going back! It's a huge step to take. And I'm glad you're finding walking is helping you. I do a lot more walking now I don't drive, and overall I'd say I'm much better mentally.

  • Thank you I do a lot more than I thought I would! Your cycling is definitely a massive achievement, takes a lot of hard work and dedication I bet but must be so rewarding for you when you're up on the moors. Slight smile

  • Sorry I missed this response before. I think I remember my dad saying it was an eminent grand theatre 2000, might not be exactly that though, I really can't remember for certain.

  • It sounds amazing, and I think it's so lovely that you continue to look after it and play it. From a time when they built things to last as my grandparents used to say.

Lovely memories for you. So nice how certain things hold such special memories. Blush

  • Your piano sounds wonderful and it must be so nice knowing it’s been in your family for a long time

Thanks A=BCD! It's an amazing instrument to me, that it still works after a century and barely needs tuning after a decade, probably.

My grandpa enjoyed playing, I have early memories of listening to him Slight smile

  • Hello A=BCD, thank you. I hope you enjoy your cafe trip. I do enjoy them but like you find them difficult at times due to noise. That is kind of you to say that but I do a lot of cycling and have a good fitness level. It does take a lot of calories to fuel it around 4000 per day plus. I hope you enjoy your cycling too.

  • Lovely! Heart eyes

  • I'm sorry about your cat.

I've felt well enough to return to college again after a long break. I haven't felt up to riding the bus with everybody else, my anxiety couldn't take it; but vice versa I'm feeling the mental benefits from walking to and fro college.

  • Our roads are nearly always mucky, and twisty and narrow with no formal passing places, at least you didn't have potatoes bouncing out the back of a trailer, this is a yearly hazzard round here, as are farmers with the bailing spikes down on thier tractors, probably in the hope of catching a good crop of cyclists who are such an embolism on our roads.

  • Hello LucyLandRover. Welcome back! Slight smile Thank you. I've been enjoying my hot chocolates, I'll be going again this weekend and I am looking forward to it already. Wow that's a lot of cycling! Well done, that's an amazing achievement. You must have felt exhausted by the end of it! Cycling on the moors must be so peaceful.
Since losing my license I've cycled a bit more where possible but I get tired if I do it too long.

  • Well done Desmond, that’s a great achievement, not an easy thing to do. Mucky roads in the country side were my least favourite part of driving! My car always felt like it was going to slide in to a hedge or something. Luckily it never did! I find farm workmen don't really care about road safety. They leave a lot of debris behind them and cars have to swerve out the way if it's too big. Personally I think they should clear it up after for safety reasons.

  • Sorry to learn of your loss. Losing a much loved pet is always hard. Well done for going out for a hot chocolate and I hope you have many more. I took part in the 100 mile event last month and rode 1537 miles. Yes, rather a lot but I am a keen cyclist and need to ride out on the moors to escape people!

  • I managed to drive on mucky roads, without losing control of her.

The Farmer, whose workmen left the mess behind, doesn't seem to give two monkeys. And, the irony of it all, he was the one who bought my family home and land. I guess I have to learn to adapt.

  • That sounds so tasty! I love mushrooms, and they go so well with squash and chestnuts.
