Autism Friendly Cinema Screenings

Has anyone has any experience of the autism friendly screenings that cinemas provide?

I think that they have been doing this for some time, but it has only recently come to my attention.

On the surface it seems to be an excellent & inclusive idea where changes to the experience include

  • No trailers / ads prior to the film
  • Customers are free to sit whether they want (you book a particular seat)
  • You can take your own food (avoid the cinema chain rip off prices)
  • Lights remain on (maybe dimmed a little)
  • Volume is turned down (I think that even NT's would say that regular cinema sound volume can be OTT)

The downside is that the choice of film and screening times can be extremely limiting.
Can't say that I'm a big fan of the Trolls movie franchise!
On the other hand, autism friendly Saw X or the like would be interesting.

    Theatres do this too, I'm really tempted with some of them just so I can sit away from another person and walk about!

    Aside from the personal freedom, I'm also kind of intrigued to see how it works with other audience members who have more difficulty than I do, just because I'm interested in theatre/cinema and audiences.

    But oof, it's all a bit challenging really... Not to mention, yes, unaffordable.

    I almost went to see Barbie at a DOG FRIENDLY showing though. Having the dogs there makes anything possible! But it was at 11.30 am and would have run into their lunchtime... Also one of them makes noise like a bagpipe if another dog upsets him. Maybe he'd be better off at an autistic showing?! So I'm waiting for a dog-friendly relaxed performance Fingers crossed

    I had no idea that cinemas now do autism-friendly screenings. What a great idea!

    It's been a good many years since I last visited a cinema. To be honest, if I do happen to see trailers for films I think I would enjoy watching, I tend to work on the assumption that if I wait a year or two it will be broadcast on TV and I can save myself the cost of a cinema ticket.

    Just call me Scrooge! Wink
