What era would you like to live in and why?

This fits in with a couple of other threads.

There is 7+ decades of experience here on the forum so perhaps we can share some experiences.

I would like to live now in the digital age because it means I am connected to the world.

Also everyday living is vastly easier due to modern engineering and technology.

Actually there are many more reasons.

However, pace of life and overwhelming choice are 2 negatives of now for me.

If I had to live in another time though I would like to be wealthy and part of the Bloomsbury group in the early 20th century.

How about you?

  • I would love to see how the pyramids were actually built, was there any advanced technology in the Stone Age (as some findings suggest) and how Sphinx looked like originally. Was it a Lion pointing to the Leo constellation, at least that was supposed to be around 10.000 years ago if I remember correctly, or was it actually Anubis (there were mentions about Anubis on the desert in ancient Egyptian texts) I’m also curious to see, what is actually hidden under this statue. It’s I possible that this huge monument would have been only a decoration or a monument sacrificed to some deity. Researchers found that there are some chambers underneath. But access there is forbidden. So if I have lived in ancient times as someone high in the hierarchy, I would have probably knew these secrets. Maybe I did in my previous life, but of course I wouldn’t remember that in my current life.

  • I think we can learn a lot from history.  But many people wish to dwell there as an escape from the horrors of modernity.  That tendency in humans is incredibly unhealthy. Both for themselves and for the world.

Not the answer you may have wanted, I know.

  • I remember the newspaper for that America Is At War! Terrible how evil some people can be.

  • The days during the World Wars have to be up there for worst ever

And for one of the worst days of history this has to be one of them

When I first heard of this at school I couldn't believe how much tragedy could happen in a single morning.

    Tragic x

  • I'm a history nerd, I've always been fascinated by history, I own a lot of history books loads of ww2 ones. I think disasters in history are my special interests. I would love to travel back in time to one disaster or another just to see what it was actually like.

Where to go though and what time? There's so many interestingly devastating days to choose from. Which is the worst?

I could end up seriously hurt though Joy I'm sure it would be worth it anyway.

  • could go either way. society could collapse, we could lose alot of tech and progress, we could revert back to caveman age. or we could progress and advance to any degree. given the rate of tech progression i believe tech is progressing pretty fast now, every year entertainment tech advances in larger leaps..  perhaps we will end up living in vr pods and our bodies or brains kept alive eternally while living inside a advanced machine system where we can do or be anything we want.

ofcourse then theres possibility of expansion to space... which will be needed i think and will be a limit breaker, as on earth no matter what advancements we make i believe we will be limited on earth.

perhaps, we grow so high in population that we cannot support or house the population, society breaks down into disorder, chaos erupts, people turn on each other for basic things to survive, for shelter, for anything. human advancement will stop or decline too in that scenerio.

  • I wonder what the far of future

Say like five hundred years will be like? :)

  • both my grandfathers died in their 60s.... and yet im told on the system i wont even be able to start to claim state pension until im 70 lol i think the gov has very high expectations of the longevity of our lives, my people, my ancestors, we dont live as long as the posh london privileged folk that set these age limits on pensions based on their southern life spans.

  • well all past historical eras have been violent and dangerous and lacking of easy tech advances.

modern era probably is easiest so far.. and has all modern stuff that will be uncomfortable to live without.... but yet in the future this modern era maybe seen and uncomfortable and backward and more dangerous too... so perhaps a more advanced future era, with all sorts of life improving tech that we cant even comprehend yet that will improve our lives in many ways... so id have to say a future advanced era, so long as we advanced and dont decline and collapse ofcourse lol

  • I imagine I would be a disaster in earlier times. Like visiting almost any time period for a month would be amazing, but I'd probably have a breakdown and/or die of dysentery if I lived there.

So I'd probably be boring and say 10 or 15 years ago. Almost all of the things I love now would still be there but... a lot of not great changes have happened since then.

  • I think that I’d have wanted to live during the time of Saint Patrick and Saint Brigid in Ireland among the early Irish Christians

  • This thread is so cool ^^

I think I would like to live life in the early 19th century like in the 20s and 30s in the country side. I liked the clothes back then and how basic and easy life was.

Or I'd love to go to the Victorian times and see what that was like though sadly both these times weren't good for people like us as it wasn't understood back then.

  • Just bumping ... as the subject came up in another thread ...

  • That's a very original response and food for thought

  • I've always dreamed about being an explorer, go somewhere where human have never been before. So, there are 2 possibilities:

    • in the past. Times of Vasco da Gama, or Columbus.
    • in the future. Whenever/if humans will set to explore stars.

I wouldn't mind life just before all the sciences where discovered and put into theories and formulas, so I could be the one doing the discovery, like Galileo, or da Vinci, or Copernicus. For todays science I'm not bright enough, and not motivated enough to accomplish anything. There is as well a moral issue, I wouldn't like giving humans even bigger bomb, until humans solve the aggression towards each other and exploitation problem, I won't try even if I had an opportunity.

I'm fine without any tecuhnology aids, my grandad was rising me to take over farm, so I'll survive without running water, electricity, or internet. and be able to live 'off the land' in case I survive WW3

  • Given everything that has happened since Covid and given that I’m also an Irish Traditional Catholic Patriot, I would have liked to have lived in Rural Ireland in the era of post 1922 Catholic Ireland during the time of Eamon De Valera as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) - life was much simpler  then and Rural Ireland was a much nicer place to grow up - my grandparents generation were deeply rooted in their Catholic faith and despite being much poorer and times harder than they are today, people were far happier by comparison

  • You've chosen some really interesting periods there and, like you, the opportunity to travel back and 'take a look' would be most welcome Blush
