Vivid or Calm?

I've noticed a few discussions recently which mention colours. Colours in general are very important to me. I've seen it mentioned that autistic people have a preference for blues and greens and I would agree with that personally. I cannot imagine a world where everything were shades of grey or beige Neutral face

This piqued my curiosity about preferences in relation to the 'Vivid' or 'Calm' colour choices we are provided with on this website.

My preference is most definitely vivid. I find the calm option harder to see, to the extent that it feels as if it is hurting my eyes if I try. Which one do you opt for?

Clicking the button to switch quickly between vivid and calm induces a physical nausea sensation in me. Does anyone else experience this?

  • I use my phone, on that I have to go to the three lines on the top right, choose my name from the bottom of the menu that pops up, and then choose notifications from there.

  • Sorry for derailing the thread to ask such a trivial question, but can anybody help, please?:

If I see something like this - (3) - at the top of the page, I understand that it refers to three notifications...but how do I go directly to a page which shows me exactly what those three notifications are? I worry that I'll fail to acknowledge someone who might, for example, have replied to me or Liked a post (or something like those two possibilities).

    Thanks.

  • I just accepted that Vivid was the way the forum is meant to be, despite knowing that a different choice is available to me. Even my seemingly straight-forward  'choice' is telling, and has a number of possible connotations - no wonder I have difficulty making decisions. :D Haven't even looked at the Calm option because my imagination conjures up a sombre, depressing look to it.

  • I go for vivid as well - I've tried calm and it seems to pull my eyes, makes them feel like they're straining to adapt to the difference.

I think it must be an autism thing for me. It's like the dark mode on my phone does the exact same thing to me, so I always stick with light mode. Otherwise I do start to feel unwell.

Puts way too much pressure on my eyes.

  • I must admit, it caught me off guard too! It was a similar experience in the lego shop in fact! But, like you, I love that gradient and seeing it in nature. My favourite place to be is beside the water. In fact, when I was at university, and prior to my diagnosis, most people would gather in the concrete centre where the shops were, where as I would go to the nature reserve and sit by the lake. It was nice to be alone and just with the various wildlife and nature around me. Lots of examples of those sorts of colours could be found there too and it was nice to get away from the busyness of it all.

I have just looked at pictures of the lake you mentioned. Stunning doesn’t quite do it justice, but it really is! Tranquil. I’d love to go and see it in person- now there is a place to spend a good deal of time.

  • I have had a lifelong fascination with the gradient of green to blue. Not necessarily in relation to M&Ms Smile but usually the colours in lakes and oceans. You've reminded me of Lake Louise in Canada, my favourite place on this planet. The colour of the water there is divine.

  • An interesting question and one that made me laugh (due to a memory of mine). In particular, this part:

I've seen it mentioned that autistic people have a preference for blues and greens

This is most certainly the case for me! I went on a trip to London a few years ago. Very overwhelming all in all, however, we went in the M&M chocolate shop. They have walls of colour coded M&Ms. Very satisfying order to it all actually. My family had moved on and had to find me again after a good chunk of time had passed. Apparently they had lost me, but I had just been standing, transfixed on the gradient of green to blue M&Ms. It was so calming and I just went into my imagination for a bit. Never actually bought anything, but had a great time anyway! A bit of order and calm in the surrounding chaos of the capital.

But to come back to your actual question, I prefer vivid in the day, when it’s lighter, but calm at night. I use the forum on my phone so find that at night, vivid is a bit ‘much’, even on my phone’s lowest brightness setting.
