Autistic Ear Worms

The first thing that goes through my brain when I wake up every morning are the lyrics from a popular song of the moment. The song changes, but without fail, it is always the first thing that I think of. When I am stressed about something (currently whether my son is going to get a place at performing arts school), these lyrics 'invade' my waking thoughts and play in my head constantly when I am not consciously thinking about anything. Currently, the chorus from Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero (It's me. Hi. I'm the problem. It's me.) are currently playing on loop in my head. I believe that this is likely to be an autistic thing, but wondered whether anyone else experiences anything similar? If so, what is your current autistic ear worm? Thanks.

  • I too can be prone to ear worms. Sometimes it might be due to an advert featuring a particular song, which then repeatedly gets played on the jukebox in my head. At other times, there is no logical explanation for it, and it just happens out of the blue.

  • I am very prone to ear worms, I don't know if NTs get them too (sometimes I wonder if know any NTs?)

It doesn't take much to trigger them and they can be hard work to remove. My husband likes listening to annoying music with annoying lyrics and those can become earwormy, especially if he plays a song too many times which he tends to do. It's the worst if you don't even like the song! Or adverts. Even just the first few bars can trigger it.

It can be useful if I am trying to learn a song, but otherwise not so much. I don't get them all the time, as I complain so much he does try to vary the music so nothing gets in my head too badly. I wonder if sometimes i am more prone to it, like if I am stressed? I don't have one right now, praise the Lord!
