Feeling low after assessment.

I had my assessment yesterday which took place over about 3 hours. I was asked lots of questions by 2 psychologists and another psychologist spoke to my parents, I also had an ADOS assessment. I have been really anxious about going, so I expected to feel much better once it was over. I don't know the outcome yet, I should find out in the next 2 weeks. Although the psychologists were really nice, i found discussing all the things I struggle with has left me feeling quite low and not too good about myself in general and I was wondering if other people have felt the same after the assessment?

  • In many ways, I felt relief after the assessment.  For me, it was like I finally got to talk to someone with an understanding about my condition, and to get some stuff off my chest that I couldn't otherwise discuss with people.  But I think I know what you mean.  It's as if by actually giving voice to these things, you're in some sense making them visible and real (even though they are).  You're giving them more substance.  It can be quite emotionally draining, so just go easy on yourself for a few days.

I hope it all comes through positively for you.

  • Thanks for that Windscale, I'm glad it's not just me. I will see if they run a similar course if I get a diagnosis, sounds useful.

I certainly did for a while.  Then about six-months later the assessment centre I went to ran a post-diagnosis course for people with Aspergers.  I found the course both useful, if nothing else for having confirmation I wasn't alone, but also difficult emotionally as well.
