Grandparents - just want to give our grandson (and our daughter) the best chance/support but how.

Hi

Our 11 year grandson is a wonderful chap - amazing at maths and science but is lock in his world - and we have time to give him, he treats self harm and since lock down has found going back to school extremely tough...

I am interested to know what good looks like (as I am learning) places to go that stops the sensory over load - but is educational also, he loves making stuff from lego and meccano.... but then when we go across the fields in the mud and its pouring with rain (his request) - takes his coat off does want to wear it and runs off (when being asked to put coat back on...

loves the sea - no matter how cold and rough - but hates the 3 hour drive - so don't want to go.

as I say wonderful person but just want him to be content and achieve what his talent will allow him.

Other grandparents must have the same questions - would really appreciate some idea's

Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I'm not a grandparent but a ... dad! I understand that it's a not clear condition about your grandson. When I was in the same situation for my son I tried to start a path with more than equipe of specialists. I went around to get two, three different opinions from different team of doctors and therapists (it was better and more complete an equipe rather a single doctor). At the end of tour (it might take time, consider and accept it) I got a clearer vision from the comparison, so I could decide the next steps and, little by little, started to programm near and middle future for my son. But I was necessary to integrate all information that I got by myself in light of a diagnosis as clearer as possible from experts. I really hope it's useful to you: it's just what I've experienced.
