Starting an Aspergers/ASD online group for my local area

Hey guys - it’s easy to start a group without FB... If you start a group on FB - it’s not yours ever. It’s owned by FB. And they can and do just move the goalposts and you will be powerless to do anything at all about it. I’ve seen it happen over and over again since the start of FB. 

You could use PHB forums or Wordpress instead. 100 times more professional and you’ll have control. Honestly FB is evil and is hijacking our tech in the form of Survielalance Capitolism. 

Absolutely agree. I much prefer traditional websites and forums, like phpBB or VBulletin, to FB. The owner has full control of their website whereas with FB they are at the mercy of Mark Zuckerberg and his business interests.

FB is trying to centralise and take over the internet whereas forums are decentralised.

Phew - someone out there agrees! Excuse while I break down in tears of happiness! 

Just trying to explain this to my NT friend of 25 years is heart breaking. Had a row today about it without even meaning to. 

While a few hours early Mark Zuckerburg allows a massacre to take place allowing live online murder! :(

it’s not Capitaliism - it’s Surveilance Capitolism. 

The new commodity is - users private data. So the way you hold the device, the speed to tap, where you use it, what emotions you have when using it. That’s the data they harvest. Not your pics or statements but what emotions you use when you type your statements. 

Anyone who who ignores the fact will be turned into a battery by the machines - lol :D 

Hmm - not the older folk who were using computer online from early days. We had our first computer in 1981.. A ZX81 

it drives me crazy when fully grown adults are like infants on the web. Totally clueless. They may as well be completely illiterate 

I think it's very sad how the younger generation have turned their backs on internet forums, or perceive them as old fashioned social media for greying middle-aged social inadequates to discuss model railways and warm beer, and have migrated to FB.

One person told me that the transition from dial-up BBS, to Usenet, to internet forums, to FB is merely evolution in social media, so that trying to defend internet forums or encourage more people to use them instead of FB is just as pointless and counterproductive as trying to defend dial-up BBS. My counterargument that internet forums have an advantage of being decentralised and owned by their owners whereas FB is centralised and owned by Mark Zuckerberg didn't hold any water.

Another issue I have is with anti-capitalist people and organisations using FB as a platform for discussion and dissemination. FB is run first and foremost as a profit making business and Mark Zuckerberg is an obscenely wealthy individual. Pure hypocrisy when alternative platforms exist.

I agree with you in some respects but it's not just "the younger" generation, just people in general. Older adults tend to be less clued up on exactly what information they are giving out. Personally, I don't have a FB account, or Twitter, or Instagram, Snapchat (not even sure what that one is tbh) This is actually the first forum I've ever posted messages on. I don't ever subscribe to anything, I only by things online as "guest" so I don't make an account, I don't save my bank details on any websites, I don't even have loyalty cards for shops etc. Why would I want companies using me as data? I know a lot of data will still be collected but I make sure it's minimised as much as possible.

This may be a bit controversial and OT but from my own research I have noticed that a very high proportion of people nabbed for posting 'terrorist' material on the internet have posted it on FB and Twitter but it's rare for somebody to have posted it on a forum or a conventional website. This raises questions whether FB and Twitter are in cahoots with the police and the establishment who are using them as surveillance machines to crack down on anybody that they don't like. The legislation defining what is and is not 'terrorist' material is vague and imprecise, as well as varying between different countries, so convictions are not really black and white. I believe that terrorism is only the thin end of the wedge and a test bed for later cracking down on all sorts of dissent and anti-establishment discussion.

Back in the 1990s the British police used to prowl Usenet groups for pornography but I don't think that any convicted 'terrorist' has been caught using Usenet to communicate or disseminate material despite the fact Usenet still exists.

And that’s why the younger generation are at the highest risk bevasue uktimateky the don’t understand how the www works or even what it actually is. Facebook users are at huge risk that the DO NOT understand at all. It’s scary for them and the do not even know what data harvesting is. They’re doomed. Not the pre internet generation though because We invented the internet and I was using In in 1996 way before dot industry - Dot Com didn’t exist. No google, Facebook was a decade in the future. Just trust me - but ignore if you like. Facebook and all data harvesting platforms have evil intent. 

I grew up BC (Before Computers), well the first home ones came in my mid teens.  I fully concur about Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat because of the invasive nature of their algorithms/tracking.
If my real name was John Smith then it would be one of thousands in the world.

What I see that works is a mix of everything:-

Website with a forum, Instant Messaging ability, A Knowledge database to capture/share useful hints/tips and an electronic publishing function (going paperless/mail free).

With my background reading then a lot of Neuro Diverse people as more technologically suited to such things then there must be a network of proper that could voluntary support this venture with the NAS.  It is some people with that vision, recognised by those who GET IT and build the collaborative solutions by the society for the society and useful to everyone wanting to know/understand more about our uniqueness.
