The Autistic Christian

Let me say from the start that I have a strong faith and although I’m willing to discuss it, I have not started this thread to try and evangelise anyone. Simply I’d like to discuss with other autistic Christians how they cope with church, other Christians and trying to resolve their head around everything.

  • There are two verses in the bible that always make me laugh when I think about what it means to be a Christian on the spectrum. They are:

John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. (Because of the whole 'other planet' feeling, this one could have been written for Aspies)!

1 Corinthians 9:22 I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. (This reminds me of how we mirror other people to fit in).

Of course they are both verses out of context but they still make me smile.

I am a theology student and for one of my essays I would really like to explore how churches could better support us. I wonder if anybody on here might be interested in answering some questions, and if there might be a way I could distribute them that wouldn't break the community rules? It wouldn't be until the New Year so plenty of time to figure it out :)

  • I’ve been to several churches, mostly quakers and the first church of Christ scientist. Both are autistic friendly I would say. I’d be happy to answer questions.

  • I think the Quaker’s are one of the purest churches out there. As for the other...

Anyway, I think the questionnaire and discussion would be a good idea. I’d happily host it in a discrete part of my company website if the rules are an issue, or a private group on Facebook would be another way.

  • I've never met a Scientologist. Jehovah's Witnesses on the other hand...

  • I'm sure Scientologists would also welcome you with open arms and open your wallet!  Many years ago I went for a tour round their HQ in Sussex and they were so welcoming that they signed my up for a 10 week course (at a cost).  Sadly I was so blissed-out that I got my name and address wrong.

I'm an athiest / Humanist (from an old-fashioned C of E background - Matins / sung Evensong choirboy) with an interest in New Religious Movements / Cults.  I can assure anyone here that Scientology is certainly not connected to Christian / Abrahamic faiths.

  • That would be really helpful. I'll have a chat with my tutor when I go back in January and if it gets approved by my college then I'll put some questions up - thank you! :)

  • I don’t mean Scientology by the way, that’s a whole different group from Christian scientists, which is a totally different thing. My doctor just invited me to his church which I think will be too big and noisy for me but I’m going to go on Sunday as he invited me and I was hoping he would! Yeah, I’ve felt more at home with the quakers than any other Church and I’ve been with them for the longest, I’ve met some lovely people through that church.
