My son newly diagnosed

Hi All

This is my first ever thred (on any site)!!! yesterday my son was diagnosed with autism, they are unsure where on the spectrum he sits, the main areas are his social interaction and the difficulties he has when playing with children (he is very loud and sociable but normally likes to play with a certain child - and anyone coming into his environment whilst playing he either pushes, pulls or states he wants to smack them. During the multi-agency panel I had some queries in terms of their comments around certain areas where they felt he hit the criteria, but I need to support my son where I can and rather than trying to question the outcome of their decision (which was my natural reaction)  I am now trying to support my son where I can. As a new member is there any resources, literature techniques that would help me understand his difficulties and areas where I can help him at home. Thanks

  • Hi NAS37532,

We have a number of resources and information pages here on the site for people who are newly diagnosed with ASD or a parent of a child recently diagnosed. You might want to start here - http://www.autism.org.uk/about.aspx - the 'About Autism' page which links to various other sections of the site ('What is Autism, Behaviour, Communication, Family Life and so on).

More specifically, the page 'After Your Child's Diagnosis' - http://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis/children/recently-diagnosed.aspx -  has information and advice on supporting your child and yourself, autism and education, financial assistance if you require it, how to talk to your child about their diagnosis, and more.

If you would like to speak to someone directly, the NAS Helpline is available on 0808 800 4104 from 10am-4pm Mon-Thurs and 9am-3pm Friday.

Hope this is of some help,

    Best wishes,
