Hearing voices

Has anyone any information or experience of hearing conversations, whistling in your head??? Does anyone know if this is connected to ASD??

  • Yes I often hear words out of noises, but also I hear speech as noises (most particularly on phonecalls). If you hear specific noises (particularly constant pitch) this is most likely tinnitus. I sometimes hear my own thoughts very loudly as if it's someone talking, but I know it's my own thoughts. Having read other posts on this forum it would suggest there are linkages to ASD, in this "super pattern matching" context. However, if you are hearing genuine conversations, or the voices are distressing you or asking you to do things, you should see your doctor. OCD is quite a common co-morbid condition with ASD, which is another possibility, intrusive thoughts.

  • I have what can best be described as super pattern matching. its overactive though and will attempt to make sense of random or garbled input by matching it to spoken words. When I brush my teeth it sounds like a couple arguing.

  • Yes she is, interesting thank you.

  • Whistling...is she on sertraline? It gave me tinitus. Doctor said it's rare but may be because I have such good hearing I can even heat white noise from downstsirs

  • Indeed, just still feel very new to this and slightly unsure about things like these conversations, thanks for your reply

  • In the absence of another sensible explanation, such as someone having a conversation in the distance that she can hear, or it being her own internal voice, then it might be worth checking with her doctor or other healthcare provider about this?

  • This is about my 20 yr old daughter who has high functioning ASD /Aspergers. She is always alone when it happens and can never make out what is being said almost like a conversation from a distance. This sometimes also sounds like someone whistling , really don't know how long its been going on for? Has only been diagnosed last year and it seems to have made her look at every little thing that she experiences and that others don't.

  • Please could you be more specific? What are you hearing in your head? Is there anyone else present at the time you are hearing them or are you hearing them when you are on your own?

  • In my youth a psychiatrist asked me if I could hear voices. I thought he was being really strange because I could hear him loud and clear, so I nodded. Ended up on a high dose of antipsychotics! JoyJoyJoy

    Nowt so queer as psychiatrists.

  • What sort of conversations?

I have a really clear/loud/vivid inner monologue that's almost like I can hear it, and sometimes that tips over into my brain replaying conversations I've had, rehearsing conversations with people, and imagining various scenarios (I'm a big daydreamer, definitely comes under 'maladaptive daydreaming'-and I use these daydreamy imaginary conversations between imaginary people for creative writing). And I think those things are related to ASD (though equally common seems to be people who don't feel they have an inner monologue as such and think more visually).

  • This happens with my 20 yr old daughter, just don't know how seriously to tackle this, even if I should be?

  • Don’t know if it’s connected to ASD, but it happens to me.
