There are members here very into music, particularly from past decades, so I thought maybe a dedicated thread would be a good idea.
I've lived within 6 decades of music.
My favourite is the 1970s and I think the best (debatable of course).
I've realised since my diagnosis that for 20 years (70s and 80s) music was my 'special interest'.
I've not had such an avid interest since the 90s and in fact, I find the associations with music mostly too painful to be able to listen.
Music is a sure trigger to memories for me and often the associated pain.
So, why the 70s?
Tamla Motown, Soul, Disco, Reggae, Punk, Glam Rock, New Wave....
Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Elton John, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Pink Flloyd, Velvet Underground, Gary Numan, B52s...
What are your favourite eras and what do you consider the (debatable) 'best' ?
Please feel free to talk about anything music related here including classical.
A few nightclubs and pubs in my city aren't there anymore.
I've seen......
Kiss three, times,
Madness, twice,
Deep Purple, twice,
Alice Cooper twice, Three times if you count The Hollywood Vampires
Roy Wood,
The Fratelli's
Lightning Seeds,
Blue Oyster Cult
Marky Ramones Blitzkrig
Glenn Tillbrook
King King, twice
Europe, three times
The Tubes, Twice
The Mission

So do you like 80s music as well as 70s? Or was the interest just also in the 80s?
I most probably got an interest in music later in childhood, the film ‘Grease’ most definitely sparked an interest. I had been bought up on a diet of Elvis and Country music.
One of my earliest memories is the Bay City Rollers, my cousin had all their records, when I had to go and live at my aunts, she would play them for me.
From about the age of about 10, Sunday evenings we're the highlight of the weekends, the new top 40 was released on the steam powered wireless. I would huddle, microphone in hand and wait for the DJ to stop talking, Sunday evening was bath night so someone would normally walk in to inform me of this fact just as a track started.
It wasn’t until I got a paper round that I could fund any music of my own, an ex jukebox copy of The Rivers of Babylon was my first purchase for the princely sum of 20p.
Bruce Springsteen became an interest and still is, Madness and Bad Manners were always in the charts.
I listen to anything from the Laurel & Hardy theme tune (Dance of the Cuckoo’s) to Puccini. Many 70’s and 80’s groups still greatly interest me. Big interest in Talking Heads at the moment.
Test
As you know, I am jealous of one of these in particular! That's a great line-up though,
Me too. I love all that stuff.
Yes. I used to buy all three.
Does anyone remember any music venues/nightclubs that have now closed down?
I remember loads from Portsmouth but a particularly special memory is going several times in the 1980s to the Rum Runner in Birmingham which was a centre for the New Romantic movement and in particular Duran Duran.

I do
I LOATHE background music ...when I'm out and it's a restaurant or cafe, music should be banned (or the premises owner shackled as a punishment).

I remember dancing to it at Nero's in Southsea.

Ditto.

Good point.
Phones drive me slightly nutty - I've been to several things where people are recording the whole thing and I want to slap it out of their hand.
Actually, I think behaviour in general is worse at gigs than when I was young, especially drunken dancing.
Although there was pogoing happening at the 2 Stranglers gigs I went to that wasn't in front of seated people (all standing).
I used to buy New Musical Express, Melody Maker and The Face magazine.
Anyone else buy those?
I don't have a favourite decade, but I've come to appreciate some of the music created by bands in the 70's, individual singers too.
I like medieval choral music too, lots of people don't, including the people I live with including animals, my old dogs used to sing along with it, which didn't exactly enhance my listeniing experience. The could just about cope with Medieval Babes.
I rarely listen to music anymore, partly because I want to be totally alone and be surrounded and absorbed by the sound and people interupt me. Partly because I've lost my singing voice and singing was such a huge part of my enjoyment of music, not anything formal, just being able to sing along, like a backing singer, or duet.
I dislike background music, I think it disrespectful to the musicians who have created a pice of work only to have it talked over and not really heard. I often can't hear both background music and conversation properly.
Some sorts of music make me feel physically ill, like soft rock, death metal that just sounds like a load of demons vomiting, C&W and a lot of pop music.
