New diagnosis

Hello

i am a mum of a 23 year old who we have suspected for some time has been on the spectrum. He has had a full assessment and tomorrow, we see the consultant for the outcome of the assessment. At the end of the assessment we were told that it has highly likely he would get a diagnosis, more than likely to be along the aspergers side of things.

I guess my question is, what should we be asking at the appointment tomorrow?  If he is given a diagnosis what happens next?

Thank you for any advice

  • That is a good question to ask at the meeting, "what should I be asking?". but you could also look on this website.https://www.autism.org.uk/about/diagnosis.aspx

They should have also let you know what is going to happen at the assessment so that you/he can prepare.

I would get a piece of paper and write all the things you can think of. Each time you write you should get more ideas of what to ask.

All the things that would think about for his future. Jobs, housing, independence, reasonable adjustments.

You might just be concerned with is this everything, because of other things people with Asperger (now everything is called ASD) might have.

    All the best
