My thoughts do fluctuate on it,but at present I'm very much convinced that the forthcoming assessment will show me not to have ASD. I have some autistic traits but strongly believe NVLD is a better fit. This raises an issue of being on the spectrum vs being neurodivegent . I believe the latter to be more true in my case than the former. My fear is that a negative for ASD will shut down talk of neurodiversity. I already know that the assessment centre doesn't deal with NVLD. It is obvious to me there is something going on that isn't neurotypical even if it is not accounted for by ASD - the social interaction/social skills deficits ,below average motor skills, much higher verbal than non-verbal intelligence all point away from being neurotypical, ASD dx or not. I would be interested in hearing other people's thoughts and experiences on this matter .
It's considered polite in my own head, to on first use spell out an acronym with which much of my readership may be unfamiliar.
I'd write (for example) Three Letter Abbreviation before then using TLA. It kinda gives the reader a chance to keep up, without having to take a google break. (from which they may never return of course, if they are on the ADD end of the spectrum like yours truly)
And if they ask, I am happier to give the explanation, rather than covertly suggesting that they are intellectually idle, because at least they are reading my work and asking questions!
YMMV... :c)
Probably wasn't worth replying to this old post, but my sperg, it's gonna sperg...
In DSM-5 PDD-NOS is included as an ASD - this should make things less complicated.
Not clever enough to get links on here.
but wondered what PDD-NOS stood for so googled it, couldn’t link to it so copied and pasted just enough to know.
sorry.
A pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) is one of the four autism spectrum disorders (ASD)[1] and also one of the five disorders classified as a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD).[2] According to the DSM-IV, PDD-NOS is a diagnosis that is used for "severe and pervasive impairment in the development of reciprocal social interaction or verbal and nonverbal communication skills, or when stereotyped behavior, interests, and activities are present, but the criteria are not met for a specific PDD" or for several other disorders.[3] PDD-NOS is often called atypical autism,[4]because the criteria for autistic disorder are not met, for instance because of late age of onset, atypical symptomatology, or subthreshold symptomatology, or all of these.[3] Even though PDD-NOS is considered milder than typical autism, this is not always true. While some characteristics may be milder, others may be more severe.[
PDD-NOS would make some sense. My biggest issue is to do with social interaction. If social interaction is a 'game' it goes beyond fear of the 'game' (social anxiety) , though that is present ,to struggling to understand the rules and tactics of the 'game'.
I guess it would be theoretically possible , but finding anything specific is proving to be an extremely hard task
try http://lmgtfy.com/?q=NVLD
sorry, I made a typo, but changed it immediately (~within a minute) after posting. But I guess it can't change what has been sent out by email.
Pretty much all that came up when I clicked the link was this
The embedded search term had the wrong acronym in my email copy
Have you heard of PDD-NOS? It seems this is diagnosed in individuals who are on the spectrum but dont meet all the criteria for autism.
no worries, I might have as well!
OK no worries I must have mis-interpreted.
I didn't mean any harm, I just think it's a nice video. I really like the animation. And I agree with you that it's worth asking since there might be other people who don't know the acronym, but my link solves that problem. If someone else views the forum and doesn't know the acronym and click on the reply, they will be led to a webpage that gives its definition.
Thanks Ellie.
Speed wasn't an issue I was about to go and do something else anyway and check back later. I figured if I didn't know the acronym others might have been in the same boat too.
Non-Verbal Learning Disability, Jonesy...
if you finish watching the video, you can click the link to find out what NVLD is
I don't see it as sarcasm, it's basically the same as me posting a google or wikipedia link
and I don't understand why people ask for replies on acronyms like this, which could take some time to wait, isn't it much faster to google?
I assume that's sarcasm... have I done something to upset you previously?
Would it be possible to try to find a different assessment centre, or a private specialist that might diagnose NVLD?

Pardon my ignorance but what is NVLD?
