Is secondary school a waste of time?

A home educating parent once mentioned that primary school level maths and English is 90% of what you need to know for everyday life as an adult an in most of employment. The remaining 10% can be learned as and when it is required. Most of what is taught in secondary school is not required for everyday life or most of employment.

Therefore is secondary school a waste of time from the perspective of education and knowledge?

  • It just depends on which view point you are coming from. For me, not only was it a waste of time from an education standpoint, but with hindsight, it was also very damaging.

The education system is designed to churn out an obedient, non thinking workforce and from that point of view, it is helpful, as the more ‘conditioning’ of this type a person gets, the more likely they are to become compliant wage slaves without realising it or they will go and kill other men just because the teacher, I mean, the army seargent or whatever told them to.

Some children thrive in that environment and learn the communication skills etc that will set them up for later life but I think most people don’t benefit. In terms of education, none of what you learn at secondary school is useful for anybody, unless, for example, the kid knows what they want, i.e. a doctor or something and they’re required by the idiots in charge, to have pieces of paper to say they have passed exams to a certain level.

I’m into no schooling and I have already got my sights on educating my next grandchild this way although my son has told me that I can only have one hour of unsupervised visits with my grandchild at any given time as he doesn’t want me to turn it into a free loving hippy type weirdo like me ;)
