my 3 1/2 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with autism. Don’t get me wrong I’ve known for a long time that this day was coming. But I suppose now having it all confirmed I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus she is non verbal. Dosnt eat food only snacks (crisps yogurt fruit) that’s literally it. Where do I turn how do I get her the help and support she needs
I got in touch with my local authority. They had an outreach team. In my borough of Brent it is called BOAT-(Brent outreach autistic team). This was a good first port for me because they could advise and access all services for my youngest son. He's Age 6 doing ok in main stream. His elder brother who didn't get the support early didn't do so well. But he's now 12 and in special school and doing fine. Hope your local borough can help you x
Did you have her diagnosis through camhs? We ended up paying private as his app isn't until mid Jan!! All you can do is keep fighting for the help she needs! x
Yeah know what u mean only just had her diagnosis but feel been fighting for someone to listen to me for such a long time. And this is only the beginning of our journey
Hi...it's not awful & selfish at all I have thought and said why him why us!? My lb should be in school but only lasted 5 weeks I've been trying to find him a suitable special school and have 2 in mind but it has to be approved by the LA so should know on Friday. It's so frustrating, as if it's not bad enough going through all this anyway you then have to fight to get them the help that's needed its disgusting
thank you so much
Hi there yeah it is gutting I feel terrible but I keep looking st her thinking why my child I know how awful and selfish that sounds yeah she’s in nursery waiting on a specialist placement and gets speech therapy
Hi NAS35378,
You may want to look at the online booklet the NAS provides called 'After Diagnosis' for people in your situation whose child has just been diagnosed with ASD. It offers information about ASD and what support and services are available to you. You can find it here - http://www.autism.org.uk/products/leaflets/after-diagnosis.aspx
You can also look at the Family Support page here - http://www.autism.org.uk/services/community/family-support.aspx - or the Autism Services Directory here - http://www.autism.org.uk/directory.aspx to find support in your local area.
I know searching through all the different options might be a bit overwhelming, so if you prefer you can call the NAS helpline on 0808 800 4104 where you'll be able to get advice and support directly.
I hope this is of some help,
Best wishes,
