A Royal Wedding, Huzzah!

Good Fortune to all who may read.

I honestly have no idea why I begin this Thread, yet it is begun nonetheless, and I do feel quite strongly about it. I very much like and respect Queen And Country. And...This is my first and maybe last attempt at a POLL. (I might also expect this to be a very short Thread.)

What think anyone here, of Our Great Royal Family...?

  • Thank You for this reply, Mister. I would quote parts, but there is too much with which I agree. The "Spectacle of our traditions", I like this a lot, too.

I think that there is some actual LAW which prevents Our Royal Family from interfering with "Politics/Political-Politicians"... or something. This is one reason why they do charity work and support Armies, but they cannot really stop (current) politicians from doing work which is very un-charitable, and it is as if the two factions are remote from each other almost to the point of opposition...? (Royals vs. Government.)

Politics is a bad + complicated topic to discuss however, and so I only mention it, there. Is this Thread over with, now...?

  • As someone who holds quite left wing views I ought to dislike the idea of the royal family.

Certain aspects I do - the privelege, the fact that they are very much removed from reality (the idea that they think the land smells of fresh paint!).  But there is much to admire in our system.

In times of national strife, when the country is really at a loss, the royal family (the monarch) can express a view without it being taken as political.  Democracy has thrown up some really extreme and unsavoury characters.  Hitler was initially the result of democracy, and so was Robert Mugabee, and we mustn't forget Donald Trump.  Donald Trump is a fine example as to why an elected president is not a good idea!

I also enjoy the spectacle of our traditions.  The changing of the guard, the Trooping of the Colour, the State Opening of Parliament - we certainly know how to put on a show and it gives many people a lot of pleasure seeing these events.    The Royal Family do cost money - and it is a lot of money - but any other system would also cost vast sums.  Only today, Boris Johnson was saying how he thinks that secretaries of state should have access to a private aeroplane when on government business so just because someone is elected does not mean they do not have ideas that are expensive.

As for the Royal Wedding itself, there has been a lot of venom spat about Megan.  As someone who does not know her, I have no opinion about her, but in any case it is not my concern.  Prince Harry is old enough to know what he wants and to make his own mistakes if it is a mistake.  Many people have made mistakes where love is concerned, but it is none of our business, we should not pass judgements as we do not know what goes on behind closed doors.  But from what I have seen, they seem very happy together, and I wish them well.

  • I just love watching wedding ceremonies of celebrities because it entertains me, that's it!

  • (Warning: This begins with some sarcasm.)

Greetings, me again. Given the overwhelming amount of interest in this Thread, I suspect that, now that the weekend is over... it shall drop into obscurity... (...)

I just wanted to Post how much I liked it, and this is my favourite picture from the entire affair:

...I had to take this from the "Daily Mail" Website. A better picture would ALSO show what was happening down below at the time, and that was the Kissing parts (!). But I like that "Family" Picture, there.

I missed this next part, but I also like this "Family" Picture, involving differing "colours"..:

...And as this Thread ends, I shall admit that I also liked this Royal Wedding because the Main Person concerned had "Fire"-Coloured Hair!

Fair Play and Goodbye for now, here.    :-)  :-)

  • Her Father might have to give her away via smartphone, he's in hospital I think and isn't expected to be able to attend the last I heard.

Maybe her Mother will do it instead? That would be a prominent role! And certainly very modern, which they seem to be going for.

  • I think Harry was the British medieval short spoken form of the French name Henry. Or something along those lines.

  • ...Me again, not staying at this time of day, but just posting somethings which I forgot to write last night.
Those who cannot attend or who are not invited, could sort of attend in a Virtual way, by having someone who is there using their SmartPhone or Tablet. I have seen this done upon TV, yet I am not of the "Internet Generation", and so I do not know how silly or insulting or acceptable a suggestion this is or not... (I sort of imagine the Bride walking up the aisle, hand-in-hand with and then being given away -- by her Father via an Apple iPod, or something...)

Also, the best thing about this Wedding for me, would be the *sight* of Miss Markle's Mother there in a prominent role. There are a lot less pictures and media coverage of her, than there are of the Father; however if she is right up beside the Couple, then it would be difficult to ignore her or to cut her out of pictures there, finally. (!)
...But for some reason I do not think that I am supposed to say *why* I write all of that last part...

I mean no insult at all - Please be well and have a great weekend, anyone... :-/

  • ...Here in London, we have Big Ben, which I do very much respect. --- But newly built near to it, was a Parliamentary building called "Portcullis House". There is no building in the World, I think, that I could hate more than this place. When I have to cross Westminister Bridge, I always cross the Road to avoid it. Hate, hate, hate...

There is currently a "Tesco" <> below it, and that is as close as I have ever gotten to it, for I ran out of tissues that day, and so I had to go in to gain more tissues, and then crossed the road immediately after that... (!)

(Also newly built here in London is that "United States Embassy" thing. I avoid this as well. I only mention that here because the real reason it was put there, was to be close to Battersea Heliport (which I like)... but for some reason the mainstream Press/Media did not mention that at all. But I know this because I live in London and a little bit near such things.)

  • Greetings. Me again. Now that I have sort of finished with the "NAS Forum Maintenance" Thread(s) for a time, and can get back to Posting randomly again (until Hot Weather!)... I thus revive this Thread.

I voted up Mr. Martian Tom's reply as well, FYI, anyone. I understand, yet still like the idea of Royalty and Weddings. It required my reading a semi-cynical article in a Free-Sheet (-"Shortlist" -) to recall why...

This wedding, and our Royal Family... are "FUN". They are a chance to enjoy "fairytales" and "fairytale adventures" -- in REAL LIFE. A Prince marrying a person who then becomes a (title-wise/inherited) Princess!

This Thread is now closer to the time... and, I do not mind that after the Weekend, that it drops into obscurity. But now I try to Post here why I began it in the first place. A form of escape, cheer, unity, patriotism... are the reasons for appreciating Royalty and a Royal Wedding. I despise Parliament and "The Government" myself... but I do respect The Queen.

  • No interest in the Royal Family at all, though I wish them no harm.  I've never really understood the national obsession with them, though.  Bastions of inherited wealth and privilege, they're the head and backbone of the entire body of social and class stratification in the UK.  The elite of the elite. But maybe we Brits just like to defer.  We like to have an institution that we can look up to, and keep us in our proper inferior place.

As for the wedding... I'm sure it'll be a good distraction for the masses: a national 'coming together' and reason to get the Union flags out and wave them in a Britain stuck in the quagmire of Brexit negotiations.  Let's not forget, too, the 'cleaning-up' of the streets of Windsor, so that no one has to see homeless or destitute people.  We don't want to be reminded of social problems on such a 'happy' occasion, do we.

I resent paying my taxes to fund part of it when there are far more important things to spend the money on.

Sorry.  Party-pooper.  Big party, too.  £32 million.  Alright for some.

I'm not married anyway, so I wouldn't be invited.

  • I think I identified with Endymion more because he ended up sleeping so much! And it felt less of a 'lie' to give myself a male name than to identify with someone like Selene, who was reputedly an extraordinarily beautiful creature / goddess. I have been likened to many things in my lifetime but, sadly, a beautiful goddess is not one of them!

  • Firstly, I mean to Thank You, for replying so much, ever,, Madame. I have been meaning to say that for a while.

...And "Endymion" is Mythologically associated with a Male Entity... The Female counterpart is "Selene", Goddess of the Moon. But this is The Internet, and persons may call themselves whatever they fancy...?

And that is a little off-topic, yet, well, whatever.

The press still calls Prince William "Wills" a lot. And Harry Potter is a National Institution. And I do not know the full name of a "Bill" or "Billy" -- Billiam? Billner? But this is myself begining to ramble/waffle, now... and that means that it is getting late for myself....(!)

Back to the start... I always stand up and slighlty Salute, whenever the National Anthem is played. Complete madness, built in, and probably one reason why I felt compelled to begin this Thread! Nonetheless... Fair Play to yourself and all, come what may of it.

  • I'm not good at using certain nicknames either, I don't mind 'Harry', 'Billy', or 'Jenny' if I'm introduced to the person as that but I prefer to use real names. The only ones I can't bring myself to utter at all are really ridiculous nicknames, like 'Dodger', 'Sparky', or 'Moe' so it's been very strange for me in joining this forum and having to call everyone (including myself) the most unlikely names!!

  • ...Just to balance this (madness) out... This is what I found out about the Bride:

    Full name: Rachel Meghan Markle.

(One of the Links I used is:

    http://metro.co.uk/2018/03/16/meghan-markles-real-name-prince-harry-called-henry-surname-7393129/

...and that is that, for now, maybe.)

  • but it should be easy to find out I guess.

...Thanks to the "joys" of The Internet, I just looked up and found out this:

The full name is something like: Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor

"Prince Harry’s title is His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales."

    And ...

    harry potter 1997
    Prince Henry 1984

...But I say what I said because Harry Potter is still so very popular, and people called thier children "Harry" rather than "Harold". Prince William could be called "Bill", but that does not happen. I do acknowledge what you say, Miss Endymion...!

If I ever met Mr Prince, I would call him Henry and never Harry, but that is maybe my own pedantic-Aspergers, Ho-Ho...!     :-D

  • I think in might be traditional for royal Henries. For instance in Shakespeare's Henry V:

Cry — God for Harry! England and Saint George!

  • Well, it's my idea of "chat" but then, I'm not exactly an expert  ; )

Isn't Prince Harry much older than the Harry potter series?

  • Upon official documents (which they print in newspapers), it says "Henry".  I myself had always thought that they preferred to call him " Harry" because of "Harry Potter"...

(I suppose this is "chat", now?)

  • When it was announced on the news that he was named, and showed pictures of him leaving hospital with Charles and Diana, the newscaster said "His parents announced that he will be known as Harry." That's what I remember anyway. I think Diana used to call William "Wills" too but I haven't heard it used since he was a little boy. (Wouldn't like to speculate about what she called Charles!)  I don't know either of the boys full names though (?) but it should be easy to find out I guess.

  • Greetings Miss Endymion. Please read my reply, which I was typing to myself yet I took so long that you replied during it. I cannot POLL...
