Project ideas

Hello, my name is Ellen and I'm a student. For my project in design and technology we have been told to create a product the can cater for clients' needs and I decided that my target audience would be autistic children... my hypothesis is 'there isn't enough toys out there for autistic children that can be used for both therapy and fun' I was wondering if this statement is true or not? Or what kind of products I could create? Thank you.

  • Hi Ellen. My son is 4 and diagnosed ASD. we have purchased toys such as cog sets and latch type door opening things which he really likes. One thing we noticed he loves, but it is hard to find are toys that are chunky, that take an action and make things happen. I have always wanted to find something like the following:

A wheel that can be turned that winds something up, which releases a ball that rolls into something that causes something else to happen (all contined, as the first thing he would normally do is to loose the ball)

Basically a self contained simple wooden Rube Golberg machine

(Check youtube for Rube Golberg machines)

This would satisfy our sons curiosity for switches, handles, cranks and movement, which is where we find fidgit cubes do not deliver. I know I would also play with one as well!

  • thank you so much and sorry for the late reply I've been doing some research on what autism is and how it works and different types of treatments and therapies. the suggestions of the play set and toys you've given me have been very helpful I was wondering if there any specialist stores that sell these items or any other toys.

    thank you
